Murdock amassed his early wealth developing real estate and reinvesting the profits in various companies in the 1960s. He joined Dole Foods in 1985 and was the company’s chief executive until 2017. In March last year Dole merged with Total Produce PLC, of Ireland, and became Dole PLC. The deal provided Murdock entities including his Castle & Cooke Inc. with 17.5% of Dole PLC shares. The new entity filed for an IPO and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange in August, raising $400 million, which valued the company at about $1.43 billion. Murdock retained 9.4% of Dole’s stock.
