LAANE Announces Leadership Change

The Los Angeles Alliance for New Economy has announced that Madeline Janis will step down as executive director to focus on an environmental development initiative.

In an e-mail letter Tuesday, Maria Elena Durazo, chair of LAANE who also serves as executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, announced the leadership change. She also said that Roxana Tynan, a deputy director a LAANE, will become the new executive director in February when Janis steps down.

In 1993, Janis co-founded the non-profit organization, which advocates for better wages for workers, often in conjunction with labor unions. LAANE helped to pass the Los Angeles Living Wage Ordinance in 1997, a law that requires companies doing business with the city to pay a wage higher than the state or federal minimum.

Tynan has worked at LAANE since 2001. Previously, she was economic development deputy to former City Councilmember Jackie Goldberg and an organizer for Unite Here, a labor union coalition based in New York City.

Janis will continue to work at LAANE, heading up a new program to advocate for a green economy in Los Angeles.

LAANE plans to honor Janis at its annual City of Justice Awards Dinner Dec. 8.
