Unified Grocers Inc. in Commerce, the largest wholesale grocery distributor in the Western U.S, announced Wednesday it will sell its Springfield Insurance Co. and Unified Grocers Insurance Services – both of which provide insurance to grocery stores that work with Unified – to New York’s AmTrust Financial Services, Inc.

As part of the deal, AmTrust will buy Unified’s Covina building and hire all of the employees at the facility. Springfield Insurance Company and Unified Grocers Insurance Services are both housed there.

Unified Grocers Chief Executive Bob Ling said the move will help the company streamline its business and focus more on its grocery wholesale operations.

“We believe this transaction to be in the best interests of clients of both Springfield Insurance Company and (Unified Grocers Insurance Services) as the businesses have been sold to a forward-looking, successful company that can apply a dedicated focus to their clients,” Ling said in a statement.

The agreement, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in three to four months.
