The debate over how to improve the woeful dining and retail selections at Los Angeles International Airport came to a relatively civil end Wednesday when the City Council gave its final approval to nine concession contracts spanning four terminals.
The airport’s current concessionaire, HMS Host, did not win a single contract in the latest round of bids and urged council members to start all over. HMS Host has maintained some sort of presence at LAX for almost 50 years.
Three food and beverage contracts were awarded to Miami-based Areas USA, which plans to open a variety of restaurants at the airport, including Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, gang-intervention eatery Homegirl Cafe, downtown Los Angeles steakhouse Engine Co. 28 and Culver City-based gastropub Ford’s Filling Station.
