Guitar Center Inc. announced that Mike Pratt has been appointed chief executive and a member of the music retailer’s board, effective April 1.

The Westlake Villlage company, which was acquired by an affiliate of Bain Capital Partners in 2007, said late Wednesday that Pratt comes from consumer electronics retailer Best Buy Canada, where he served as president and chief operating officer since 2008. He previously worked for retail chain Future Shop, which was acquired by Best Buy Canada in 2001.

“Mike is a proven leader in the retail industry with an impressive track record of success,” Matt Levin, Bain Capital managing director, said in a statement. “We are thrilled to attract an executive of his caliber to lead Guitar Center.”

Gregory Trojan, Guitar Center’s last chief executive, resigned in October. Pratt succeeds Marty Hanaka, who joined the board and has been serving as interim chief executive since January, commuting between California and his home in Florida. Hanaka, who was chief executive of golf specialty retailer Golfsmith International Holdings Inc. from 2008 to 2012, will remain on the board and assist in the transition, the company said.
