Norms Passes Major Hurdle

The landmark Norms restaurant on La Cienega, had been declared a cultural monument Thursday, temporarily protecting it from being demolished.

The Los Angeles Board of Cultural Heritage Commissioners voted unanimously to declare the restaurant a historic cultural monument, according to Nels Youngborg, a planning assistant in the commission’s Office of Historic Resources.

The city had issued a permit in January to allow the building to be demolished, but the new status will temporarily protect the restaurant. Located at 470 N. La Cienega Blvd., it opened in 1957.

The proposal is now scheduled to be voted on by the Los Angeles City Council.
