American Apparel reported on Monday that it narrowed its loss for the second quarter although it was still deeper than expected.
The downtown Los Angeles company reported a $16.2 million net loss (9 cents a share) for the quarter ended June 30. That compares with a $37.5 million net loss during the same period last year. Revenue was flat at $162 million.
Analysts had predicted losses of 6 cents a share.
The company’s board in mid-June suspended Charney from the chief executive’s post with the intention of firing him for cause, pending an investigation for alleged wrongdoing. Charney resigned his membership of the board and agreed to a consulting role pending an independent investigation.
American Apparel has appointed the company’s first two female board members in its history. The appointments have been widely interpreted as attempts to improve the company’s image in light of the sexual harassment allegations that had surrounded Charney’s tenure as chief executive.
Earnings were reported after markets closed. American Apparel shares had closed at 94 cents on the NYSE and rose slightly in after-hours trading.
