Shares of garment manufacturer American Apparel fell 14 percent Thursday after a company filing reported that said Deloitte & Touche had resigned as the company’s independent public accounting firm.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission late Wednesday, American Apparel said that since its last quarterly filing on March 31, Deloitte had found “material weaknesses in internal control over financial reporting” and told American Apparel management about the problem.

“Deloitte advised the company that certain information has come to Deloitte’s attention, that if further investigated may materially impact the reliability of either its previously issued audit report or the underlying consolidated financial statements for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009,” the filing stated.

Deloitte resigned on July 22. Four days later, on Monday, American Apparel hired Marcum LLP as the company’s independent auditor.

After losing as much as 34 percent of their value, shares of Los Angeles-based American Apparel partially recovered to close Thursday at $1.55, down 26 cents or 14 percent for the day.
