Six of the 11 markets to be closed by Albertsons in Southern California are in Los Angeles County.

The grocery chain, owned by an investor group led by New York private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, will complete the closures by the end of February, said Lilia M. Rodriguez, spokeswoman for Albertsons Southern California division.

“They were underperforming stores and not good places for future profits,” Rodigruez said.

Liquidation sales begin Wednesday. Affected local outlets are in Long Beach, Whittier, Monrovia, Woodland Hills, Valencia and Canyon Country. Stores in Moorpark, Huntington Beach, Ontario, Chula Vista and San Diego also are slated to close.

Each store employs between 50 to 75 employees, and the company will try to place as many as possible in other positions, Rodriguez said. After the closures, the chain will have about a dozen groceries remaining in the region, including stores in Los Angeles, Burbank and Simi Valley.
