THE MONEY: After July death of John Anderson, the Business Journal is keeping wife Marion and family on list at last year’s valuation, pending more information about ownership stakes in Topa Equities, the clan’s L.A. holding company.

BUZZ: Even before his passing at age 93, family patriarch had handed over day-to-day responsibilities at Topa to three of his four children, led by namesake John E. Anderson Jr. Daughter Judy and son William also have positions and serve on the board, along with Anderson’s second wife, Marion.

The company has more than 40 subsidiaries in diverse industries and is a significant commercial and multifamily landlord in Los Angeles and Hawaii. Subsidiaries include Topa Insurance Co. and Ace Beverage Co., which holds L.A. Budweiser distributorship.

Marion remains active in philanthropy through the Marion & John E. Anderson Foundation charity. She sits on the board of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where the couple made a $50 million gift for a new inpatient wing named in the couple’s honor.

John Anderson, son of a Minneapolis barber, went to UCLA on a hockey scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in business. The university’s graduate management school is now called UCLA Anderson School of Management after Anderson endowed two chairs and donated $42 million. After a stint in the Navy during World War II and earning an M.B.A. at Harvard University and law degree at L.A.’s Loyola University, Anderson started law firm in 1953 before going into business.
