Nicolas Berggruen Purchases Former Edith Mayer Goetz Estate in Holmby Hills for $40 Million

Nicolas Berggruen, once known as the “homeless billionaire,” has purchased the former Holmby Hills mansion of socialite Edith Mayer Goetz for $40 million, listing agent Aaron Kirman of John Aaroe Group said.

Berggruen, head of private equity firm Berggruen Holdings Inc. in New York and founder of think tank Berggruen Institute in West Los Angeles, received the nickname for his lifestyle of living out of luxury hotels.

Berggruen bought the roughly 20,000-square-foot home with 11 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms from Gary Wilson, former chairman of the board for Northwest Airlines and former chief financial officer at Walt Disney Co. and Marriot Corp.

Berggruen’s roughly 2.2-acre estate at 300 Delfern Drive was originally part of a larger over 4-acre lot that was later split in two. The overall estate was listed in October 2016 for $79 million. It was later made available in separate halves in February.

The lot with Berggruen’s Georgian Revival-style property was relisted for $45 million. However, 320 Delfern Drive is still available for $37 million. It includes 2.2 acres of land and a 1,780-square-foot house with two bedrooms and five bathrooms.

Wilson bought the overall estate in 1990 from Goetz, the daughter of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio head Louis B. Mayer. She married film producer William Bill Goetz and died in 1988.

Kirman along with Jeff Hyland and Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents. They are also representing 320 Delfern Drive.

Berggruen also owns a reported nine units and maid’s quarters in the exclusive Sierra Towers on the Beverly Hills-West Hollywood border.

After creating the Berggruen Institute, he donated $500 million to it in May 2016 to establish an endowment. He told the Los Angeles Times he purchased 450 acres in Brentwood for $45 million for the institute’s campus.

The news of the home acquisition was first reported by The Real Deal.
