Ed Rosenthal, the veteran L.A. commercial real estate broker who’d been reported missing in Joshua Tree National Park, was found alive Thursday in critical condition.

Rosenthal, 64, was found in the East Wide Canyon area, about two miles from the national park’s southern boundary, according to the website of the Desert Sun newspaper. Rosenthal was conscious when rescuers found him and was being airlifted to a local hospital to be treated for injuries and the effects of exposure.

Rosenthal was found several miles from the original search area. His disappearance, reported to authorities on Sunday, had raised concerns in the Los Angeles real estate community given the triple-digit temperatures in the desert. Rosenthal told colleagues he was going to Palm Springs to celebrate two recent deals he had brokered. He set out on a hike on Friday.

Rosenthal, a Culver City resident who operates New Downtown Brokerage, had recently brokered the sale of Clifton’s Cafeteria and several properties connected to the downtown Eastern Columbia condo building.

Rosenthal is known as the poet-broker of downtown. He’s penned poems on the community for years, with topics ranging from historic buildings to business and civic personalities.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic that Ed’s been found alive,” said Andrew Meieran, whom Rosenthal represented in the Clifton’s deal. “As long as I’ve known him he’s been a fighter and a survivor — as he’s proven himself resilient in the most trying of situations. It’s one of those times you have to just sit back for a moment, be thankful, and remind yourself that you should never give up hope.”
