KCET has sold its studio on Sunset Boulevard to the Church of Scientology for an undisclosed amount, the station announced on Monday.

Chief Executive Al Jerome said KCET is currently in discussions to move to other production facilities in the Los Angeles area. Operations will continue at the current location for up to a year.

KCET had been PBS’s flagship station in Los Angeles for 40 years but went independent at the start of this year rather than pay $7 million in licensing fees to air such shows as “Charlie Rose,” “NewsHour” and “Antiques Roadshow.”

Ratings and donations have since dropped dramatically. The station has rebuilt its schedule with a line-up that includes “BBC World News,” “Al Jazeera English” and reruns of the Helen Mirren police series “Prime Suspect.”

Plans for the sale of the station were first reported last month.
