A Frank Gehry-designed project headed for Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood won Los Angeles City Council approval on Tuesday after a two-year planning process that dramatically reduced its scale.

Originally intended by developer Townscape Partners to stretch 234-feet tall, the project will now reach only 178 feet.

Councilman David Ryu fought to make the project smaller, issuing a list of desired changes to the Planning and Land Use Management Committee as recently as Oct. 20. Many of his concerns – over community benefits, parking, traffic, and affordable housing – were addressed in the revised plan approved by the City Council.

“Compromise is never easy,” Ryu said in a statement, adding that he respected concerns from local residents over the project’s size and impact, and advocates for a revision to California’s Density Bonus law that can give developers leeway to build big.

Townscape partner Tyler Siegel said in a statement that he is pleased the project can move forward.

“Our aim has been to create a timeless and important project that is genuine to L.A.’s creative and progressive identity,” he said.
