Homes: Heritage Square South

Nonprofit developer San Francisco-based Bridge Housing has unveiled its latest affordable housing development – a 70-unit permanent supportive housing apartment for seniors in Pasadena.

The complex, named Heritage Square South, sits at the corner of Fair Oaks Avenue and Orange Grove Boulevard. It features 69 one-bedroom apartment units for seniors who have previously experienced homelessness in three low-rise buildings, all connected by pedestrian bridges, plus one on-site manager’s unit.

“All seniors deserve a home where they can live with dignity,” Ken Lombard, president and chief executive of Bridge Housing, said. “Each of these 69 units will give residents a safe, stable place to call home and comprehensive services to help them change their lives for the better.”

Union Station Homeless Services is providing intensive case management services for the Pasadena property’s residents. These include counseling, assistance with health care, independent living support, on-site activities and more.

“Heritage Square South represents a vital step forward in this community’s commitment to ending homelessness among our seniors,” Howard Kahn, interim chief executive of Union Station Homeless Services, said. “Union Station Homeless Services is honored to partner with Bridge Housing to provide the supportive services helping residents not only secure a safe place to call home, but also thrive with dignity within this supportive community.”

The complex replaced a shuttered fried chicken restaurant. It lies directly adjacent to another Bridge Housing development, Heritage Square, which opened in 2016 and features 70 affordable apartments for low-income seniors.

Amenities at Heritage Square South include an on-site manager, 24-hour security, laundry rooms, an outdoor courtyard and lounging areas, two flex rooms, and a community room. It also includes 2,200 square feet of commercial space.

Financing was secured through a combination of providers, including the city of Pasadena, Wells Fargo Bank, JLL Real Estate Capital, FHLBank San Francisco and California Tax Credit Allocation Committee. It was designed by downtown-based KTGY Architecture and built by Irvine-based R.D. Olson Construction.
