O.C. Register Publisher to Launch L.A. Paper

Newspaper publisher Freedom Communications of Santa Ana will launch a daily newspaper next year called the Los Angeles Register that will compete with the Los Angeles Times.

Freedom Chief Executive Aaron Kushner announced the news to the staff of the Orange County Register Thursday.

Kushner, a former greeting card company executive, led the purchase of Freedom last year and has so far bucked convention by investing millions of dollars into the company’s daily newspapers, first at the Orange County Register, and then at a new daily paper the company launched in Long Beach in August.

The idea is to take on local newspapers that have cut back on reporting resources in recent years, including the Los Angeles Times and papers in the Los Angeles News Group, such as the Los Angeles Daily News and Long Beach Press-Telegram.

Eric Morgan, a spokesman for Freedom, confirmed the launch of a Los Angeles paper.

“We are moving forward and launching a unique and very valuable brand of local newspaper with distribution across the Los Angeles area,” he said.
