Shaun Lumachi, publisher of the Long Beach Post, died early Saturday morning in Florida from injuries suffered in a car crash.

Lumachi, who was 33, co-founded the online and monthly print news outlet with Long Beach Councilman Robert Garcia.

He previously worked for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and served on the boards of organizations, including the Long Beach City College Small Business Development Center.

Lumachi was in Florida to attend the National Workforce Association conference in St. Petersburg.

He was fatally injured early Saturday when a pickup truck veered into the back driver’s side of his rental car where he was sitting. The driver and another passenger were treated for minor injuries and released from a Florida hospital.

Following the news of his passing, Lumachi, who is survived by his wife, Dezire, was remembered by friends and colleagues.

“He was an innovator, a tireless champion for Long Beach, and a consummate professional,” said state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, who represents the area. “His voice and passion will be greatly missed.”

Garcia told the Long Beach Press Telegram that Lumachi was like a brother to him: “We’ve just been friends, confidants. He’s just been an incredible person. He certainly was the most talented guy I’ve ever met.”
