Bon Appétit to Leave Los Angeles

Respected food magazine Bon Appétit will move its editorial office from Los Angeles to New York this fall, publisher Condé Nast said late Monday. Longtime editor Barbara Fairchild will be leaving the monthly publication when the relocation is complete.

It’s Condé Nast second relocation of a Los Angeles-based publication to the East Coast in as many months. The New York company in August said it would relocate Architectural Digest following the departure of longtime editor Paige Rense. Both magazines were acquired by Condé Nast in 1993 from Knapp Communications, a Los Angeles company.

“The move of Bon Appétit’s editorial headquarters to New York is part of the company’s continuing efforts to strategically align our brands for future growth and to enhance efficiencies and coordination by consolidating our assets,” said Chief Executive Charles H. Townsend said in a statement.

A successor has not been named for Fairchild, who told other media that she had not wanted to move back east. Margaret Russell, former editor of Elle Décor, will succeed Rense at Architectural Digest.

The move follows the decision last year by Conde Nast to stop publishing its flagship food magazine, Gourmet, which was based in New York. The magazine, however, retained its website, and this summer Conde Nast announced it was starting an iPad version of the magazine.
