Port Starts Construction On Bridge

The Port of Los Angeles recently held a groundbreaking for the $152 million Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway project.

The Port of Los Angeles recently began work on the $152 million Avalon Pedestrian Bridge and Promenade Gateway project in Wilmington on 12 acres of former industrial land.

The 380-foot-long bridge and adjoining park will expand public access between the main commercial strip along Avalon Boulevard in Wilmington and the recently completed Wilmington Waterfront Promenade spanning berths 183 to 186 at the Port of Los Angeles. The bridge and park project sits on 12 acres of former industrial land.

“We are thrilled to begin construction on this transformational project that will create more green space and recreational opportunities for Wilmington residents and visitors alike,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said at the Feb. 26 groundbreaking.

Bridge design plans

The pedestrian bridge is being designed by TYLin, a San Francisco engineering firm, as a concrete, cable-stayed arched structure that will offer a safe, grade-separated crossing point over working rail operations. It will have one pedestrian lane in each direction.

Stockholm, Sweden-based Skanska has been chosen as the main construction contractor.

The adjoining landscaped park will feature a 40-foot-tall architectural sundial. It also includes a walk and overlook, an open terrace seating area, pedestrian pathways, community gathering areas, two parking lots and public restrooms.

The project also involves street and utility improvements at Avalon Boulevard and A Street, including grading, paving, striping, lighting and landscaping.
