Westside Remix: Spuds, Tiger, Flamethrowers

Start in Century City, where Spuds Powell recently laid claim to the No. 1 spot on Barron’s national list of the “Top 100 Independent Wealth Advisors for 2017.” Powell is managing director of Kayne Anderson Rudnick Wealth Advisors, and has been in Barron’s top 10 for the past five years … Spuds’ real name is Caleb, by the way, and Barron’s considers local stalwart Kayne Anderson Rudnick among the independents that “compete with Wall Street’s behemoths while putting a local stamp on their services to clients” … Over to Pacific Palisades, where Tiger Woods took the opportunity of the Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club to announce a new name for what had been the Tiger Woods Foundation. Look for TGR Foundation to bring some of the programs it’s developed at its Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim to L.A., and also start annual selections of Earl Woods Scholars from public and charter schools throughout L.A. County … Mentoring has been key for Woods going back to his college days, when he got the benefit of Bill Lazier, the late dean of Stanford U’s business school, as an academic mentor, and Cardinal coaching legend Bill Walsh on the athletic side. Woods is always looking for mentors from the community of business to pair with the high-potential kids his foundation aims to help – and more so now with its plans to grow in L.A. Visit tgrfoundation.org for more information … To Beverly Grove and A.O.C., where Wells Fargo’s Brent Williams certainly knows how to blend business and sport. The middle-market specialist was set to take a key client to opening day of the Genesis Open to see if Woods could continue his recent progress on the course. He planned to fly a bit higher than the middle market the following day, going for a round with Aviation Capital Group CEO Khanh Tran and CFO Madhu Vijay at Pelican Hill along the OC coastline. Williams has some experience in lending in the aviation sector, which keeps him in touch with the execs of Pacific Life’s aircraft leasing subsidiary … On to Bel-Air, where the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation got a touch of the high life in the form of a recent thank-you party at Rupert Murdoch’s Moraga Vineyards. The media mogul didn’t make the bash, but his wife, Jerry Hall, was a gracious host for firefighters, foundation folks and guests from the neighborhood, who came by to say thanks for LAFD’s largely successful battle to spare the area the sort of devastating damages seen elsewhere during the series of wildfires that struck the region a few months back. The flames of the Skirball Fire lapped up to Murdoch’s little vineyard, and got too close for comfort to many nearby homes, but LAFD kept losses to a minimum, with the blaze destroying six structures and damaging another dozen or so … The neighbors turned out in force to thank the firefighters with words and donations to the LAFD Foundation, which often is a supplementary source of funds for key pieces of equipment used in the field … Fun to consider the ballcaps guys wear to California-casual events such as the Bel-Air fundraiser, where baseball teams were out but Gulfstream, Montage and Elon Musk’s Boring Co. were among the brands represented … Musk purportedly raised $1 million on the sale of 50,000 of the Boring Co. baseball caps at $20 a pop, by the way … No idea if the guy with the ball cap also bought one of the 20,000 flamethrowers Boring Co. sold for $500 each last month, in what turned out to be a quick, $10 million fundraiser for the tunneling outfit … No idea, either, whether any of the LAFD representatives had anything to say about the wisdom of that bit of marketing … Wonder if Michele Stueven – formerly of People magazine’s bureau here, and now LA Weekly’s food critic – will review the repast and refreshments offered at Moraga Vineyards … Sullivan Says: Enough to the west – turn east to get the latest on Line Hotel, a hipster spot in Koreatown that has stirred a buzz with its second location in a renovated church in Washington D.C.’s Adams Morgan district (see related item, Marketing & Hospitality column, page 8).
