Deals & Dealmakers: City National Doubles Down

City National Bank’s downtown expansion comes prominent signage.

The bank, a subsidiary of Montreal-based Royal Bank of Canada, will not only take over 11 stories in the 2CAL building on Bunker Hill at 350 S. Grand Ave., but also will have the structure renamed as City National 2CAL, replete with its logo adorning on the 52-story skyscraper.

The new signage will give City National two buildings sporting the bank’s logo downtown – the institution’s headquarters office is blocks away at City National Plaza at 555 S. Flower St.

“Our decision to expand into City National 2CAL – including the addition of a second sign to the skyline – reflects both our continuing commitment to Los Angeles and the strong growth of City National Bank since its merger with RBC in 2015,” Russell Goldsmith, chairman and chief executive of City National Bank and chairman of RBC Wealth Management-U.S., said in a statement.

Some 800 bank personnel are in the process of moving into the new space, where renovations are still underway. A total of 1,600 City National employees will ultimately work out of the new offices. The company has 2,100 employees in downtown currently, and is looking to hiring several hundred more, according to a spokeswoman.

The expansion downtown comes in addition to recent City National office openings in Minneapolis, Boston and Washington, D.C.
