Expect an eventual boomerang effect as City of Hope plans a major move beyond its home campus in Duarte with a $200 million cancer center in the Orange County metropolis of Irvine. The new facility will rise at Great Park Neighborhoods, a development by Five Point Holdings, which donated the land to City of Hope to anchor an 18-acre health care campus the developer expects will draw other providers to the area. “We’re hoping to get different brands, each with a center of excellence,” said Five Point CEO Emile Haddad, who also heads the Lusk Center for Real Estate at USC. That’s the same Five Point that has the 21,500-home Newhall Ranch project in the works in the Santa Clarita Valley, by the way. Can’t say that City of Hope will plant a flag up there, too, but expect a similar strategy. “A lot of what we’re doing at the Great Park, including this concept, we’ll also do in Newhall,” said Haddad, adding that the Henry Mayo Hospital figures prominently in FivePoint’s hopes there … Not sure if there’s an airport in the future for Santa Clarita, but LAX might need a new backup plan now that it no longer owns Ontario International Airport in the Inland Empire and Palmdale Regional Airport in the Antelope Valley …Turn to page 1 for the latest on growth and the $14 billion worth of additions and renovations at LAX, which is going to surpass recent working assumptions on passenger traffic sooner than previously expected … Expect LAX to get there in style – at least as far as the restaurant and retail scene goes. The facility just added Trejo’s Tacos, among other hip and local selections, to its newly renovated Terminal 1, and has Sydney, Australia-based high-end mall operator Westfield Corp. – which is expected to see its sale to Unibail-Rodamco in France close around midyear – working to put together a lineup of shops and restaurants for the International Concourse that’s under construction as a supplement to the Tom Bradley International Terminal … Plenty of action on the hotel side of the airport area’s hospitality lineup, especially along Century Boulevard, where occupancy rates are now steadily nearing 90 percent on a regular basis. That’s a change from just a few years ago, when the establishments rode more of a seasonal cycle, according to word on street around the airport. And that seems to be the sort of shift that indicates the degree to which L.A. has entered a new era of its history since the Great Recession, a change that’s increasingly coming into focus as the city attains a new profile on the national and global stages … Los Angeles World Airports—the city-owned proprietary department that operates LAX—isn’t alone in mapping a new future. Here’s a symbol of the symbiosis the outfit has achieved with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which is busy building out its Green Line to finally get to the airport. Metro put in these three support pillars and will leave them unfinished in order to save LAX crews time and expense when they get around to getting their planned People Mover hooked up to the regional light-rail system, including the planned Crenshaw Line that’s also in the works … There’s no symbiosis like the hand-in-glove relationship between art and wealth – and Christie’s put a prime example on display at its place on Camden Drive in Beverly Hills last week, hosting a reception and road-show preview for the upcoming auction of the art collection Peggy and David Rockefeller, estimated at around $500 million overall before the first paddle is raised. Jaw-dropping stuff, even after you’ve baked the Rockefeller name and Christie’s brand into your expectations. Give the bulk of the credit to Picasso, Hopper, Monet, Gaugin and other the other famous and lesser-known artists whose works greeted guests on the evening of April 5. Save a bit more credit for the LED lights that Christie’s deployed to fabulous effect … Sullivan Says: I’m declaring an effective draw between the California Club and Jonathan Club when it comes to crab curry soup, with points to the Jonathan Club on sand dabs for pairing as an entrée– and a call for some leg of lamb for a tie breaker.
