Universal

With no new attractions and amusement park business generally soft this summer as a result of Asian financial turmoil, Universal Studios Hollywood is experiencing a slump in attendance during what should be the season’s peak.

Park officials would not disclose attendance figures, but local hotel operators cite a decrease in room bookings. “We do know it’s a little flat (at Universal), and that does make a difference,” said Marje Bennetts, a spokeswoman for the Sheraton Universal.

Industry analysts and consultants said the park is scrambling to attract customers, cutting the price of a ticket by $10 through a promotion at Burger King.

“They’re probably affected by Disney’s new Tomorrowland opening, and they’re trying to fight back,” said Jim Benedick, a partner with Management Resources, a Tustin-based theme-park consulting firm.

Financial statements filed by the theme park’s corporate parent, Seagram Co. Ltd., show that attendance at its Universal City theme park was down 20 percent through March 31, compared with the like period last year.
