THQ Inc. said it will release this spring a video game based on “Up,” an upcoming movie by Walt Disney Co.’s Pixar Animation Studios.
The game, based on the animated film slated for May 29 theatrical release, will be available on several platforms, including Nintendo’s Wii and DS, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation platforms, the Agoura Hills company said late Tuesday.
THQ’s Heavy Iron Studios unit is leading development of the game. Heavy Iron earlier created games based on the Pixar movies “Ratatouille” and “WALL-E.”
The “Up” video game will take players on an adventure with Carl Fredricksen and his young sidekick, Wilderness Explorer Russell, as they set off on a wild journey through the undiscovered jungles of South America.
The THQ deal comes as Disney beefs up its own in-house video game division, Disney Interactive Studios. Its Black Rock Studio in England is set to release a car racing video called “Split/Second” in early 2010.
