The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the 200 largest local public companies closed up big at the end of a holiday-shortened week ended Jan. 9. Wall Street began 2009 with a big rally that sent the Dow Jones industrial average up more than 250 points to its first close above 9,000 in two months.

The weighted LABJ index closed up 6.8 percent to $99.60 Friday compared to a week earlier, with gainers outpacing decliners 145 to 43.

Among top gainers were Los Angeles office and industrial redeveloper Meruelo Maddux Properties Inc., which jumped 56 percent to $1.09, and Santa Monica Spanish-language broadcast station owner Entravision Communications Corp., which gained 49 percent to $1.52.

Los Angeles diagnostic imaging facility operator RadNet Inc. gained 35 percent to $3.65, and Los Angeles oil and gas partnership BreitBurn Energy Partners L.P. rose 29 percent to $7.77.

Among the largest decliners was Monrovia ophthalmic lens maker Staar Surgical Co., which lost 10 percent to $2.41, and Covina bank holding company K-Fed Bancorp, which fell 9 percent to $6.80.
