Herbalife Ltd. reported fourth quarter net income of $41.7 million (56 cents per share) a 36 percent increase over $30 million (41 cents) for the same period a year earlier.

Sales for the Los Angeles-based nutritional supplement maker were also up 19 percent to $487 million, thanks mainly to 35 percent growth in sales in Mexico as well as a 25 percent surge in sales here in the U.S.

For the year, net income was up 54 percent to $143 million ($1.92 per share), while sales increased 20 percent to $1.9 billion.

Shares in Herbalife closed down 3 cents during trading Monday to $37.75 but gained 40 cents to $38.15 in aftermarket trading.
