Paul McCartney has signed a record deal with Hear Music, the Los Angeles-based record label of Starbucks Corp, the coffee retailer said.
McCartney, previously signed to EMI Group’s Capitol Records, became the first artist to sign with Hear Music. The announcement was made at Starbucks’s annual meeting in Seattle. The pact is a one-record deal with McCartney retaining ownership of the master recording.
No financial terms were announced.
The signing of the former Beatle comes two years after Wal-Mart announced it had struck an exclusive deal with country music icon Garth Brooks. However, the McCartney agreement is more of a traditional record label deal, because the album will not only be sold in Starbuck’s retail locations but other music retailers as well.
McCartney’s last album, “Chaos and Creation in the Backyard,” released in 2005, sold 533,000 copies.
