The federal government Thursday awarded $15 million to the twin ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles to help beef up security, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reports.
The Homeland Security grants will be used to purchase new surveillance equipment and invest in security infrastructure.
This year’s round of grants totaled more than $200 million nationally, including $4.6 million to the Port of Long Beach, $6.56 to the Port of Los Angeles, $2.25 to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for support services and nearly $2 million to area port businesses.
Catalina Express in San Pedro, for example, was given $122,000 for security measures. Other private businesses in the harbor receiving grants were Valero Oil and Yusen Marine Terminals.
