Port of L.A. OKs Truck Fee

The Port of Los Angeles today approved a cargo fee that will help generate $1.6 billion to subsidize the replacement of more than 16,000 short-haul trucks.

Starting June 1, all loaded cargo containers will be assessed a $35 fee when they enter or leave port terminals via truck.

The move comes after Long Beach port officials approved an identical fee on Monday.

The funds will be used to replace the heavily polluting diesel trucks that serve the ports with newer models that meet 2007 emissions standards.

Last month, the two ports approved a timeline for the phased ban of the oldest trucks that culminates in a 2012 ban on all pre-2007 rigs.
