Patrick Soon-Shiong is a physician, surgeon, researcher and philanthropist. He has pioneered novel therapies for diabetes and cancer, including Abraxane, which has received FDA approval for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, lung cancer and advanced pancreatic cancer. Soon-Shiong runs NantWorks, an umbrella organization consisting of a number of health care, technology and communications businesses established as part of his goal to cure cancer. He also heads Cancer Breakthroughs 2020, a coalition of support from researchers, academic institutions and pharmaceutical companies that works toward the goal of creating a vaccine-based immunotherapy for cancer by 2020. Soon-Shiong recently purchased the Los Angeles Times and other California titles from tronc (renamed Tribune Co.) and serves as executive chairman of the publications. Soon-Shiong is chairman of the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation and the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute of Molecular Medicine. Other board involvement includes co chairing the CEO Council for Health and Innovation at the Bipartisan Policy Center and serving as executive director of the UCLA Wireless Health Institute. Honors for his leadership and commitment to medical innovation and advancement of research include the Franklin Institute Award and the Pontifical Key Visionary Award. Soon-Shiong perennially leads the Los Angeles Business Journal’s annual list of Wealthiest Angelenos, with a net worth most recently estimated at $21.6 billion.
