Hugh Miller has been named senior vice president and group controller at Universal Music Group. Miller will be responsible for financial operations, worldwide consolidated accounting and financial reporting functions. He previously was vice president of finance. He will be based in Los Angeles.

Matt Loze has joined Pearson Television International as executive vice president. Loze will oversee the company’s acquisitions of international distribution rights to domestically produced programming. He previously was vice president of television at Trilogy Entertainment Group. Also, Shari Knox has been named manager of western division sales at ACI/Pearson Television. Knox will help oversee sales for California, Oregon, Utah and Texas. She previously was senior research analyst at Paramount Pictures. They will both be based in Los Angeles.

Anthony M. Spirito has been named manager of research at Tribune Entertainment Co. Spirito will generate research reports for the company’s advertising and sales staffs. He previously was group research manager at Petry Television. He will be based in Los Angeles.

Basil Iwanyk has been named vice president of production at Burbank-based Warner Bros. Iwanyk will oversee motion picture development and production. He previously was a production executive at the studio.

Alan Katz has been named senior vice president of sales for individual and small group services at Blue Cross of California. Some of Katz’s responsibilities will include overseeing planning as well as budgeting. He previously was vice president of market development at ChannelPoint Inc. He will be based in Woodland Hills.

Brandon Faulk has been named vice president of business development and managed care at Good Samaritan Hospital in downtown Los Angeles. Faulk will oversee all business development and managed care functions, including marketing and public relations. She previously was assistant vice president of business development and managed care at OrNda Healthcorp.

High Tech

Denis Clark has been named vice president of the distributed system solutions division at Santa Monica-based Candle Corp. Clark will oversee the development, pricing, packaging and product marketing of the company’s distributed systems and application management solutions. He previously was vice president in charge of business services at Sterling Commerce Inc.

Mark Skiba has been named chief technology officer at Sycronys Softcorp. Skiba will be responsible for guiding the company’s technological vision. He previously was president at Inset Systems. He will be based in Culver City.

Jim Howard has been named director of strategic technology at W3-design, a Web site development company based in Los Angeles. Howard will be responsible for pursuing new technologies. He previously was senior accounts manager.

Carole E. Handler has joined the Los Angeles-based law firm of Kay, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler LLP as co-chair of its entertainment group. Handler will focus on antitrust and intellectual property aspects of new technology. She previously was senior vice president of litigation at MGM/UA Entertainment Co.

Joan Vento has been named of counsel to the entertainment department at the Century City-based law firm of Christensen, Miller, Fink, Jacobs, Glaser, Weil & Shapiro LLP. Vento will focus on the studio, television and production company practice. She previously was vice president of business affairs at Gersh Agency.

Bill Foy has been promoted to associate publisher at Petersen Publishing Co. Foy will be responsible for overseeing the company’s motorcycle group of magazines. He previously was western advertising manager. He will be based in Los Angeles.

Robert H. Osbrink has been named senior vice president at Grubb & Ellis Co. In his new position, Osbrink will serve as regional manager of the company’s five Los Angeles County locations. He previously was regional manager of the company’s Orange County/Inland Empire brokerage operations. He will be based in Torrance.

David Drake has been named vice president of planning and development at Watson Land Co. In this newly created position, Drake will serve to broaden the company’s planning and development efforts. He previously was manager of construction at Catellus Development. He will be based in Carson.

Christopher J. Harrer has been named assistant director at the commercial real estate firm Julien J. Studley Inc. Harrer will focus on tenant representation services. He previously was vice president of marketing at real estate company LAACO Ltd. He will be based in Los Angeles.

Richard J. Karlinger has been named director of construction at Rancho Cucamonga-based Southern California Housing Development Corp. Karlinger previously was vice president of construction and maintenance at Lincoln Property Co. Also, Jim Wagner has been promoted to construction manager. Wagner previously was project superintendent. Both will be responsible for on-site renovation work on the company’s apartment facilities.
