National Technical Systems Inc. said Thursday that it had been awarded a nearly $9.6 million contract to provide engineering services and rapid response testing support to a Naval Surface Warfare Center division in Maryland.

NSWC’s Indian Head Division is a leading center for energetic technology innovation, the application of novel design techniques to emerging concepts to develop and field new energetic products, the Chatsworth company said.

Under the 60-month contract, NTS will provide engineering services and rapid response testing support for the research, development, testing and evaluation of components, equipment and systems for Indian Head and other Department of Defense agencies.

Chief Executive William C. McGinnis said the contract will an opportunity to give higher visibility within the defense industry to NTS’ engineering and test support services. The company also serves the telecommunications, automotive and high tech sectors.

NTS shares closed up 5 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $3.15 on the Nasdaq.
