Movers and Losers

Solid earnings propelled Teledyne while analysts’ upgrades fended off poor earnings for Stamps.com and Cheesecake Factory. Wilshire Bancorp and Skechers were bit by poor earnings while Enova dropped from a 52-week high.

Shares in Teledyne Technology Inc. hit a 52-week high Wednesday after the Los Angeles-based tech company posted a 17 percent hike in both profit as well as sales. Shares surged 13 percent for the week and closed at $45.20 Friday.

On the rebound was Los Angeles-based online postage retailer Stamps.com. The previous week it reported an 8 percent drop in profits, sending its stock down more than 13 percent to a 52-week low of $12.70. However, shares rebounded this week after an analyst with B. Riley upgraded the stock to a “Buy,” citing the company’s “long-term growth prospects.” Shares in Stamps.com closed Friday up 12 percent for the week to $14.46.

Nearly the same scenario propped up shares in Cheesecake Factory Inc. after the Calabasas-based company reported poor earnings. The casual dining chain posted a 5 percent dip in profits plus a 16 percent slip in sales. However, a KeyBanc analyst cited impressive same-store sales growth despite bad weather during the quarter in raising his rating to “Buy” from “Hold” on Tuesday, sending the stock up 9 percent for the week to $28.39.

On the other end was Wilshire Bancorp, which posted slight dips in both profit as well as net interest income that missed Wall Street predictions, sending shares in the Los Angeles-based bank down 11 percent for the week to $13.69.

Also suffering for failing to meet Wall Street expectations was Manhattan Beach-based shoe and apparel maker Skechers USA Inc., which lost 10 percent for the week despite posting double digit increases in profit and sales for the first quarter. Shares in Skechers closed the week at $32.95.

Two short weeks after hitting a 52-week high, shares in Enova Systems Inc. dropped 9 percent this week. Shares in the Torrance-based eco-friendly power management systems maker closed the week at $6.23.
