Applications for U.S. home mortgages increased last week as consumers took advantage of a drop in interest rates to refinance existing loans, the Mortgage Bankers Association said on Wednesday.

The industry group said its seasonally adjusted index of mortgage application activity increased 4.2 percent to 735.9 in the week ended Feb. 4, after climbing 7.3 percent in the MBA’s prior week survey.
