Mervyns Leads Lay-off List

Nine employers alone will have laid off at least 2,744 employees in Los Angeles County this month, with bankrupt department store chain Mervyns accounting for more than 60 percent of the job losses, according to state data.

Hayward-based Mervyns told the state Employment Development Department that it was to have laid off 1,742 workers at 16 of its Los Angeles County locations as of Dec. 23. The notices were filed in compliance with the California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), which requires at least 60 days advance written notice of an intended plant closing or mass layoff.

Other employers laying off roughly 50 or more workers in December include beverage distributor Haralambos Beverage Co. in City of Industry, which sent notices to 250 workers that they would be laid off as of Dec. 4

Layoffs taking affect Dec. 22 affected 169 workers at Woodland Hills-based property-casualty insurance provider AIG Marketing Inc., a subsidiary of struggling financial services giant AIG.

A total 141 Los Angeles County-based employees of the Los Angeles Times were laid off as of Dec. 17, in addition to 13 employees elsewhere in the state. Vicorp Restaurants Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, which operates the Bakers Square and Village Inn restaurant chains, laid off 117 workers locally as of Dec. 23. United Airlines laid off 107 Los Angeles workers as of Dec. 7.

Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc., a subsidiary of German conglomerate Siemens AG that develops and makes laboratory diagnostic kits, will lay off 104 local workers as of Dec. 30. Washington Mutual, which was acquired by JP Morgan Chase, will have laid off 51 workers in Chatsworth as of Dec. 31

Redwood City-based video game maker Electronic Arts is laying off 49 workers at its Los Angeles offices on Dec. 31, in addition to 104 workers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
