For those of you who know little about Koreatown its business community, its growth and its history this week’s package of stories is a must-read.
We are often reminded of the increasing importance of L.A.’s Korean community. But as is the case with the Chinese community in the San Gabriel Valley (which the Business Journal profiled last week), it remains an insular world. If you have any doubt, take a look at this week’s LABJ Forum, in which we ask business people around L.A. whether they do any work in Koreatown.
As journalists, we recognized a big gap in our own awareness and we’re not alone. Senior reporter Larry Kanter set out several weeks ago to close the awareness gap and the results are intriguing. Larry did more than lay out the usual facts and figures he observed a generational shift that has twenty- and thirty- something professionals setting out on a different career path than their parents. In the process, the area that we know as Koreatown is rapidly expanding and no doubt altering the city’s economic mix.
As I noted, a must-read.
