Thursday is production time at the Business Journal a long, often chaotic day under the best of circumstances. But in recent weeks, it’s gotten just a wee bit crazier, courtesy of several late-breaking stories.

DreamWorks’s pullout from Playa Vista happened on a Thursday. So did the agreement hammered out by dock workers and shipping companies. And so have several developments in the ongoing saga over a pro football team coming to Los Angeles.

What happens when a big news story breaks on our deadline? Well, many us work extra late (the Playa Vista story had us here until midnight). We also work extra hard because as a weekly that first hits the newsstands on Saturday (and most mail boxes on Monday), simply writing a news story that will be in the dailies on Friday doesn’t make much sense.

This week’s page 1 NFL story that focuses on the prospect of an existing franchise coming to L.A. typifies our efforts at getting ahead of the story. It’s what we take pride in each and every week.
