Margin

Lacter//margin/april6/mike1st/jc2nd

One of the nice things about covering business in Los Angeles as opposed to St. Louis, Pittsburgh or Detroit is that there are so many larger-than-life people based in L.A. And they all seem to be cutting deals.

One of them is Magic Johnson, who sat down with the Business Journal for almost two hours and had virtually nothing to say about basketball. Instead, the focus was on his many ventures in movie theaters, retail development, movies and TV along with how he first became interested in business.

Flip a few pages and you hit Lee Iacocca, the one-time head of Chrysler and current Bel Air resident who just became chairman of the Koo Koo Roo restaurant chain.

Flip a little more and there’s the story of efforts by Fox to get a piece of the downtown Staples Center. Fox, of course, is controlled by Rupert Murdoch, another recent arrival to Los Angeles.

That’s a hefty lineup in a single issue of the Business Journal and it says a lot about the economic excitement of this town, day in and day out.
