What’s a picture of a provocatively attired Ally McBeal doing on the cover of this week’s Business Journal? It’s just our way of illustrating not only how fashions for working women have changed, but how L.A.’s eclectic business environment creates daily dilemmas in coming up with appropriate attire.
Actually, our package of stories evolved from an idea I had late last year for a special report called “Office Style.” Not quite sure where that heading would lead (a few here at the paper expected a series on furniture), I kept hearing men and women around town talk about the hassles not to mention the cost of dressing for today’s workplace.
A special report was born. We drafted staff reporters Hildy Medina and Frank Swertlow to, among other things, get the lowdown on whether it’s acceptable to wear jeans to a studio meeting (depends on the studio) or whether the casual look has gravitated to downtown (get serious).
As a perfect complement to the package, Swertlow interviewed 80-year-old Frank Mariani, L.A.’s preeminent tailor to the stars. All in all, it’s pretty good reading.
