Career: Aide to Republican U.S. Sens. George Murphy of California and Bill Brock of Tennessee, 1969-70; Republican National Committee staff, 1971-72; private law practice in Long Beach, 1973-78 and again in Sacramento, 1989-91; U.S. congressman, 1979-89; ran and lost for state treasurer, 1988; elected state attorney general in 1990 and again in 1994.
