Hewlett-Packard Co.’s next chief executive will have to decide whether to stick with Carly Fiorina’s strategy of trying to beat the company’s rivals in what they do best or break the Silicon Valley icon apart into separate businesses that can focus employees, management and research resources on specific markets.

After Fiorina was ousted earlier this week, HP’s board made its short-term intent clear: to keep the strategy, but change how it’s executed.

Chief Financial Officer Robert Wayman is serving as interim CEO until a successor is named.
