Howard Marks

Co-Chairman, Oaktree Capital Management

THE LATEST: Marks and Oaktree ownership sold a 62% majority stake in the alternative investment company to Brookfield Asset Management for $4.7 billion in March. Marks has also been vocal in recent years about leveraged loans private equity firms — including his own — are using to fund acquisitions and how they could pose long-term risk for financial markets.

BACKGROUND: Marks co-founded Oaktree in 1995. The alternative asset manager now employs more than 950 people. Marks was previously with the TCW Group Inc., overseeing investments in distressed debt, high-yield bonds and convertible securities. He also served as TCW’s chief investment officer for domestic fixed income. He spent 16 years at Citicorp Investment Management, including serving as vice president and senior portfolio manager in charge of convertible and high-yield securities.

WORTH NOTING: Marks often publishes open memos on Oaktree’s website, delving into a variety of topics including politics, the economy and investing. He is a member of the investment committees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Edmond J. Safra Foundation.
