30 Years Ago This Week: Housing starts were down nationwide, but up in the West … McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach was feeling the pinch of aerospace cuts … Great Western Financial Corp. reported second-quarter profits of 31 cents a share, up from 17 cents in the same quarter a year earlier … Longshoremen were seeking a raise: $6 an hour for the first six hours, then double-time for hours beyond that.
The Newsmaker: Reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes was able to preserve his privacy once again after a federal judge denied a motion by the ABC TV network to force him into court. ABC had filed suit to block the billionaire’s attempt to take control of the network. A few days later, Hughes dropped his bid to acquire the company.
