John Drayman, a former Glendale councilman and mayor, was sentenced Monday to one year in jail for embezzling some $300,000 from the Montrose farmers market, the L.A. County District Attorney announced.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen Marcus ordered Drayman, 55, to pay $305,000 in restitution and $14,000 in back taxes. He was taken into custody immediately.

Drayman admitted he stole money from the farmers market while he worked for the association that organizes the market before and during his term in office. He served on the City Council from 2007 to 2011 and was mayor in 2008-2009.

In March, he pleaded guilty to embezzlement, filing a false tax return and perjury. In addition to jail and restitution, he is barred from ever holding a public office and will be on probation for five years following his release from jail.

Glendale police and the Franchise Tax Board investigated the embezzlement in 2011 after the farmers market discovered it was missing funds.
