Walt Disney Co. has formed a team to focus on publishing games, virtual destinations and social networks based on its TV shows, films and cartoons.

The new team will be a part of Disney Online Studios and will work to move development of kids and family-focused online content, Disney’s Internet Group said in a statement.

The team will include Disney’s Virtual Reality Studio, which has already created ToonTown.com and PiratesOnline.com, and will add to the pool of properties Disney has already purchased.

The Burbank-based entertainment company also bought online community “Club Penguin” last summer for $350 million as well as Avalanche Software, Climax Racing and Junction Point Studios over the past three years.

Disney also said last year that it plans to boost spending on video-game development to $350 million annually over the next five to seven years.

Shares in Burbank-based Disney closed down 1 percent t6o $32.19 in trading Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
