Disney Adds Interactive Travel Channel

Walt Disney Co. is launching a travel-focused video-on-demand channel that will allow subscribers to book reservations for Disney vacations.

Disney’s Travel on Demand, which will be available to Time Warner Cable Inc. and Cablevision Systems Corp. digital cable subscribers by the end of May, will enable Time Warner viewers to use their remote controls to request promotional materials from destinations shown on a Disney interactive travel-focused video channel. Cablevision viewers will be able to use their remotes to request a phone call from a Disney travel agent within 15 minutes.

Media companies are increasingly entering the video on demand arena. The Disney move comes less than two weeks after Philadelphia-based cable company Comcast Corp. acquired Los Angeles-based Internet movie ticket retailer Fandango to increase its interactive commerce offerings.

Shares in Disney were down 8 cents to $35.86 in afternoon trading Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
