Project Breaks Ground
Vestar Development Co. broke ground last week on its 27-acre Harbor Gateway retail project near Torrance.
The project involves Phoenix-based Vestar converting the former McDonnell Douglas plant on the corner of 190th Street and Normandie Avenue in south Los Angeles into a retail complex that will include an AutoNation USA, Office Depot, Extended Stay America Hotel and a food court.
Upon its opening in early 1999, the complex is expected to create at least 110 jobs and $166 million in retail sales annually.
Business and political leaders praised the project, saying it would help revitalize an area that has been hit hard by defense and aerospace industry job cuts.
