The Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority last week chose to open negotiations with a team led by Sylmar-based Tutor-Saliba Corp. to design and construct a 10-mile-long trench, the largest part of the $2 billion Alameda Corridor project.

The trench, which will run through Compton, Vernon and Los Angeles, is expected to cost between $600 million and $800 million to build. When completed, the Alameda Corridor will carry trains below street level from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the rail yards and distribution centers south of Downtown Los Angeles.

ACTA officials last week said the agency’s governing board will consider approval of a final contract this fall; construction on the trench could begin as early as next June.

Tutor-Saliba, which is the general contractor on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Metro Rail Red Line to North Hollywood, beat out other joint-venture bids led by Bechtel Infrastructure Corp. and Kiewit- Pacific Corp. Two other potential bidders, Fluor Corp. and Morrison-Knudsen Corp., withdrew from the bidding process earlier this year.

Other members of the Tutor-Saliba team include: O & G; Industries, HNTB Corp. and Parsons Corp.
