Executive Summary
The Hyperion Treatment Plant in Playa del Rey is again the big-ticket item on this year’s list of city contractors. Five contractors on the list worked on improvements to the city’s largest wastewater processing facility, which were completed this month. The five received $140.2 million during the city’s fiscal year ended June 30.
The expansion program at the Port of Los Angeles, which in past years has been the other major infrastructure project on the city’s books, has largely been completed. Whereas on last year’s list nine contractors worked on projects at the port and received $219.5 million between them, this year only four contractors, with combined payments of $44.8 million, can be found on the list.

Hensel Phelps Construction Co. received $65.6 million from the city of Los Angeles during fiscal 1998 for constructing the new terminal at Ontario International Airport. The terminal, which was finished four months ahead of schedule and $26 million under budget, opened last September.
Hensel Phelps is headquartered in Colorado, but its Southern California division in Irvine operates as an independent unit, generating its own contracts, according to Vice President Wayne Lindholm.
Besides its work at the Ontario Airport, Hensel Phelps has a number of other projects in L.A. County, including the United Airlines Terminal at L.A. International Airport, Universal CityWalk, and Popovich and Lewis Halls at USC.
