The Purchasing Management Association of Chicago said Wednesday that its index of area business activity fell to 49.2 in August on a seasonally adjusted basis from 63.5 in July.
In July, the index rose to 63.5 from 53.6 in June. The Chicago survey is watched closely for clues to the index of the Institute for Supply Management.
